LOTE Mission Statement
As members of the Foreign Language Department, we strive to create a passion for learning within all our students, while promoting respect, individuality, and pride in their achievements. It is our goal to develop proficiency in speaking, writing, reading, and listening, and promote an appreciation for diverse and rich cultural traditions, including our own. We are committed to preparing our students for the many challenges and opportunities that face our global society.
EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
“Connections” is the word that best represents the impetus to what, how, and why I teach. Brain research and educational research all theorize that the student’s emotional connection to what they learn will enhance retention. In spite of advanced communication and achievements enabled by the world of technology, many students appear to be more disconnected from the school environment, their families, and other social institutions.
As an educator, it is my challenge to connect with the students. I believe in bringing my own enthusiasm and personal experience for French language and culture to the classroom. Advanced technology in a school district that supports and promotes technology, has enabled the visual and audio sharing of my travels, family life, and French culture in general with students. The added benefit of sharing humorous anecdotes increases retention.
Members of the HS French Club experience social interaction with their peers, with the local community, and with the world community.
Sharing knowledge of French language and culture with students is my passion.  I strive to increase my connections with students by applying innovative teaching ideas that I learn at workshops offered at SE High School, and through regular local and state professional conferences.

Are you interested in extra-curricular experiences related to French culture? Events during the year have included seasonal and holiday parties, French films, a multi-course French meal at a restaurant or preparing a meal together, day trips to see French performances, such as the Cirque du Soleil. Some of the cost to students are covered by our annual fall fund-raiser. See Mrs. Bays in room 107, if you would like to join the French Club.

FRENCH 4
Check out the French 4 course, that is also offered for college credit. The curriculum is also designed for enrichment. Some activities on the curriculum map will vary each year to match the interests of students and the availability of cultural events, such as a guided tour in French at the Everson Museum.
Jour de Ste Cathérine
French 4- '10/'11
Saint Catherine’s Day is known as the fete des vieilles dames (old maids), for ladies over 25 and still unmarried. Apparently, there was a girl by the name of Catherine who was executed around the year 307 because she refused to marry a Roman emperor. That began a tradition where girls who hadn't found a husband by the age of 25 were called Catherines.
