What is the PSAT/NMSQT?
PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Who should take the PSAT/NMSQT?
All juniors who are considering going to college after high school.
Why Take the PSAT/NMSQT?
It can be your first step on the road to college.
* The PSAT/NMSQT provides practice for the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) which is the admissions exam required by many colleges. Colleges receive applications from many different high schools and every high school has different grading and ranking policies. Therefore, colleges need a tool that is a more universal measurement of students' abilities. The SAT provides them with this tool.
* The PSAT/NMSQT allows you to asses your skills in three academic areas; verbal reasoning, mathematical reasoning, and writing. By taking the PSAT/NMSQT you will be able to determine where your weaknesses are so that you can work on improving your skills before you take the SAT.
* Taking the PSAT/NMSQT gets your name out to colleges so that you can begin to receive information from them.
* Finally, taking the PSAT/NMSQT enters you in the National Merit Scholarship competition. If you score high enough you may be eligible for numerous national scholarships.
How to prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT and/or SAT?
* Take the most challenging courses you are able to.
* Learn and remember your vocabulary!
* Continue to take math throughout high school.
* Take practice tests (the more the better). This allows you to become familiar with the exam format and types of questions asked. There are many resources available in the guidance office to help you prepare for these exams.
Students must sign up for the PSAT/NMSQT in the counseling office.
